Poem #98

Viewing Landscape with fall of Icarus online…

unsignificantly
off the coast
there was

a splash quite unnoticed
this was
Icarus drowning

from “From Pictures from Brueghel: II Landscape with the Fall of Icarus”,
by William Carlos Williams

…how everything turns away
quite leisurely from the disaster…

from “Musée des Beaux Arts”, by W.H. Auden

Against Aegean Sea
Icarus flails
descending legs.

Two poets pen
mise-en-scène,
au contraire
in progress
from Ovidius,

and farmer, and goat herder,
and sailor, and angler,
whether they were aware
or they were unaware,
are similar,

trying to plant a different fiber,
watching Martes climb a Grecian conifer,
setting sail to a different harbor
or learning how to lure an otter
without fear,

which requires some measure
of failure when we are unsure.
